![]() Sometimes that approach worked- Spec Ops: The Line is haunting, for instance-and sometimes things were designed in such a way where all you could do from your couch was shrug and wonder why the developer was picking on you for the behavior they encouraged. PlatinumGames pulled a nifty trick in Revengeance at a time when a number of developers were set on making people feel bad for enjoying the games that they designed. The option to avoid killing that marked games like Metal Gear Solid 3 wasn’t as present in Revengeance, and that fact was somewhat embraced, both in the gameplay and narrative, in a way that kept this spin-off from betraying the franchise and its ethos surrounding war and death. He cut down robots with countless slices in slow-motion, and managed to take on an attack helicopter with a katana and won. ![]() The action of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance set it apart from every other Metal Gear game out there, with Raiden slicing the limbs off of enemy mercenaries who were just as cybernetic as he was. It was no longer a Metal Gear Solid game, but was being given a chance to be its own thing.Īnd it certainly was. Rather than being a game slotted in before the final events of Metal Gear Solid 4, now Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance would be happening after that game: after the game-worthy events of the lives of Solid Snake and Big Boss were complete. Given Platinum’s reputation with action games-the studio was just a few years old at the time, but had already developed some killer (and frantic) action games like Bayonetta and Vanquish-it was the right call to go with them, but the change in developer also brought a significant change in story. Platinum’s then vice-president and co-founder Atsushi Inaba told Edge back in 2012 that he saw Kojima at a party and asked him how Rising was going-“there was no response”-and then at a second party, Kojima asked Inaba if Platinum would like to make the then-canceled game instead. Revengeance was first announced in 2009-then known as Metal Gear Solid: Rising-and was supposed to be the story of how a cyborg Raiden appeared in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, but Kojima Productions hit pause on development because they couldn’t nail the action portions of the action game. that formed when Konami and Kojima split in 2015). PlatinumGames was the perfect development partner for Kojima Productions, Konami’s internal studio headed up by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima (and the precursor to the current, independent Kojima Productions Co. Revengeance isn’t what anyone expected from a game carrying the moniker Metal Gear, but it’s truly excellent in every way. The action makes it feel like something other than a Metal Gear game, but it’s everything else within that proves that there was always another way to get the messages of that particular universe and franchise across. The first-and as of now, only-title to bear that name. ![]() That’s because it isn’t Metal Gear Solid: it’s Metal Gear Rising. It rules-it also doesn’t feel very much like Metal Gear Solid at that moment. Also you’ll control Raiden running down the side of a church’s clock tower dodging missiles being shot at him from a Metal Gear, and then slice that bipedal nuke launcher in half with a very sharp katana within the first five minutes of gameplay. It stars Raiden, who at this point in time is a cyborg ninja, and discards much of the stealth gameplay that anchored the franchise as a whole for decades before it. It’s a spin-off in the much larger Metal Gear universe that’s composed primarily of Metal Gear Solid titles. ![]() Certainly sounds familiar, but is Evil Inside a "PT clone?" Well, not technically - the spirit likes to scurry backwards on its hands and feet whereas Lisa usually just stands there, and at the end of one hallway there's a distorted image of a well like the one Samara crawls out of in The Ring.Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a weird game, and that is not meant to be derogatory. Cluttered end tables and crooked picture frames accent the corridors, stuff flashes in and out of vision, and the lights turn red randomly. The Evil Inside announcement trailer walks us through the claustrophobic hallways of a two-story house, where we see glimpses of the supernatural peering down at us from the indoor balcony and looming in the distance. Evil Inside, an upcoming PS4 and PS5 "psychological horror" game launching on March 25, seems like it would fit more into the former camp, but it still looks like it could be a lot of fun. If done right, PT-inspired games can be enjoyable homages to one of the best horror games ever, or potentially stand on their own as distinct and innovative experiences with some familiar undertones. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, mind.

There are certain ground rules for summoner names in League of Legends. Why Are You Changing Your Summoner Name in the First Place? For example, let’s say that we have a lot that actually has 7.5 percent defective units, and we sample 50 and use the rejection criterion of one defective. ![]() One of the many aspects that his bosses were missing was an understanding that while over time the process might average 1-percent defective, there was no guarantee that any particular lot was. Now, as a quality professional reading that paragraph, I’ll bet you saw more bad assumptions in that paragraph than you do in political speeches of the other party (whichever party that is). I feel that our quality is terrible and should be spending more, but I just can’t compete with that argument." In fact, they say we should look at some ways to save money in the manufacture since we aren’t ‘using up’ our allowed defective margin. This indicates to them that our quality is too high, so we should not spend any money on improving quality. We have an AQL of 1 percent by contract, and they keep pointing to the fact that while we are allowed one defective per lot sample, we have a number of lots that have zero defectives in the sample. “My bosses say that I am spending too much money on quality control. He sent me an e-mail one day telling me that he had moved to a smaller new company in the same industry, and that he could use some help with an issue. ![]() I consulted and trained for a really great guy in a high-tech industry-someone who saw how the use of data could save a company money. To illustrate this, let me tell you a (somewhat simplified) true story. ![]() This is the risk that the lot contains more than the AQL even when we pass it. That’s the other risk we would need to consider-consumer’s risk. This protects the producer, but it doesn’t really address the company buying the primers. The reason is that these acceptance sampling plans were built to control for “producer’s risk.” Producer’s risk is the probability that a batch will be rejected when in fact it meets the AQL. And you will do it while knowing that it’s likely that there are more defective parts in there (on average, five per batch). I can hear you clearly across time and space: “Waaaait a minute! You mean that even though in inspection I actually found a bad part in a fairly small sample I’m going to accept the lot anyway?” (Of course, this inspection could be done at the vendor’s location as well.) Based on the binomial distribution, if you found one or less primer defective, you would accept the lot, two or more and you would reject it. For example, if you received a batch of 500 primers for ammunition and you had determined that the average acceptable quality level (AQL) is 1 percent, then you would randomly sample 50 items from the batch and test them. ![]() We can already see how this clashes with the modern understanding of quality. They constructed a series of tables and rules that would allow you to determine how large a sample to mil-std-105, take, and the number of “bad” samples allowed before you would reject the shipment. To this end, the creators of MIL-STD-105 (and its descendants, e.g., ANSI/ASQ Z1.4) used the concept of inferential statistics (based on the binomial distribution) to create a sampling scheme that could be used by a customer to determine if they should accept a shipment from a supplier. If we assume that defective product is inevitable, then we had better figure out a way for making sure we don’t get too many defective products. You can kind of see the original purpose of acceptance plans. So what’s so bad about them, and how can you help a company move away from them? And yet, hard as it is to believe, companies are still using these plans. This is totally antithetical to the modern concept of quality (conformance to target) or Six Sigma (conformance to specification). We all know (especially in this political season) that humans are addicted to their indignation high, so here’s your fix for today.īack when defective products and services were considered inevitable, the military created a standard to try to control just how much defective product was allowable before it would be rejected. Every once in a while, people ask about acceptance sampling plans and I get all riled up. ![]() From carved wood legs to more delicately tapered spindled leg chairs you’re sure to find the perfect look. Some academics define biological age as a marker of "ageing, stress, and frailty." They analyse factors like molecular inflammation markers, sleeping difficulties, and smoking. However, there have been challenges when it comes to deciding which factors to assess when calculating it. The majority of health professionals agree that there are benefits to measuring biological age. Biological age looks at the pace of ageing and helps determine your current health levels while helping predict your lifespan. Your biological age is determined using a combination of specific physiological measurements outside of your age in years.įor example, a person that is chronologically 35 years old but whose biomarkers are closer to the resemblance of an average 45-year-old would indicate that the individual is ageing at a faster rate than expected. However, it is possible to get a more revealing insight into your health status through biological age rather than chronological age. The difference between chronological and biological age is that chronological age is simply how old you are in years. It has resulted in experts developing what is referred to as biological or physiological age. ![]() This is due to the vast number of factors that make up the ageing process – including genetics, lifestyle and the environment. There is then the increased risk of geriatric syndromes like frailty and immobility, not to mention the diseases like osteoarthritis, Alzheimer's and dementia.Īlthough researchers know that disease risk increases with chronological age (along with the decline in physical and mental functions), the rate it happens differs massively from person to person. The sad truth is that the risk for cardiovascular diseases, chronic and neurodegenerative diseases, and most types of cancers increases with chronological age. It is a straightforward calculation and has been used as the gold standard by medical professionals to estimate the risk of specific age-related ailments and conditions. Chronological Age vs Biological AgeĪs you probably guessed, your chronological age is the number of years you have been alive. Continue on to learn more about the differences between chronological age and biological age and how to take years off your results. Once you have your results, you can start to plan out some lifestyle changes to help lower your biological age and support ageing well. To determine your biological age, you will need to use a biological age calculator, such as the GlycanAge test. To better understand the vast health differences among individuals of the same chronological age, experts are starting to look at biological age instead.Īs you grow older, you will want your biological age to be lower than your chronological age. So we can all have varying degrees of health. The same goes for people in their 20s, 30s, 50s and any age. For example, a 65-year-old may not be as healthy as another person of the same age. This may seem a bit of a morbid definition of the term, but anti-ageing experts are now exploring new ways to look at ageing. ![]() However, from a scientific perspective, age is more complex than this – it can also be defined as the progressive deterioration of the human body and the increase in mortality. For the majority of people, their age is the uncomplicated matter of the number of candles on their birthday cake, the difference between the year they are born and the current year. The main focus is on following a balanced diet, exercising regularly, following good sleep habits, managing stress levels and being engaged in the community as we grow older.Īt the most superficial level, ageing is the process of getting older. There are now a huge amount of studies that show it is possible to wind back your biological clock through diet and lifestyle changes. This is a powerful tool for understanding who is more at risk of disease before conditions develop. Detecting biological age could help determine who is ageing quickly and who is not. Traditional medical practices do not tend to predict serious disease risks in populations with no prior signs of disease - it is standard practice to treat issues after they arise. This is a much more helpful way to access the healthiness of people as we all age at different rates. It is a straightforward calculation for most of us and has been used as the gold standard by the medical community to estimate the risk of specific age-related ailments and conditions for decades.īiological age is how old your body seems using a combination of specific physiological measurements outside of your age in years.
